Homemade Sports Drink (aka Greaterade)

The Golden State Warriors decision to ban commercial sports drinks and make their own with Himalayan sea salt inspired me to try my own--with less sugar. You can tweak this recipe to create your perfect formula.

Homemade Sports Drink (aka Greaterade) Ingredients

  • 8 cups fresh cold water, divided

  • 3 tablespoons honey

  • teaspoon fine Himalayan pink salt

  • teaspoon calcium magnesium powder

  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper

  • cup freshly squeezed orange juice, strained

  • 2 medium lemons, juiced

  • 2 medium limes, juiced

How to Make Homemade Sports Drink (aka Greaterade)

  1. Pour 1 cup of the water into a large pot. Add honey, salt, calcium magnesium powder, and cayenne. Place pot over low heat and whisk until ingredients have dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to return to room temperature.

  2. Add juices to room temperature mixture in pot. Pour in remaining 7 cups water and whisk until well blended.

Homemade Sports Drink (aka Greaterade) Reviews

  • This was awesome I will come back to this

  • Wow. This is perfect just like it is Thanks

  • It was okay, but it was missing something. Great job through.

  • Good. We like ours with a bit more fruit juice and a little simple syrup added. (I know, defeats the purspose but I have a crew of many I need to please). It is still plenty healthy but more palatable for everyone. Way less sugar than other drinks they would generally prefer. Awesome recipie, Chef John.
